About Us

Butch Robertson, owner of BTR Management, a marketing and events company based in the NC Triangle, has over 30 years of experience planning and implementing marketing and branding programs for high profile companies in the region as well as managing many successful events.

Robertson began his career in merchandising and product placement for an international retail chain. He left that position to partner with two friends operating two athletic shoe stores in the early 80's with annual sales over $1,000,000. After 8 years, he left to become the Marketing Director for The News & Observer, which became a leader in the region with their marketing initiatives, sponsorships and company branding.

He left The News & Observer after 17 years to open BTR Management, which he still operates today.

During his career, Robertson has managed and directed over 600 running events, including The Old Reliable Run (founded and directed), the original Raleigh Marathon (founded and directed), Raleigh Rocks Half Marathon (founded and directed) as well as the Friesen 5K Run with the Canes, Healthy Kids Running Series for New Balance, Run for Hope, Great Raleigh Road Race, Raleigh Greenway Half Marathon and 10K and the Carolina Beach Half Marathon.

In addition, he has directed events for the US Olympic Committee, the National 10K Championship, US Olympic Festival Pentathlon and Triangle Triathlon. Upon the NHL selecting Raleigh as host for the NHL All Star Game, Robertson was selected to manage and direct the NHL All Star 5K, which was a huge success for the Carolina Hurricanes and NHL.
When Lance Armstrong returned to bicycling from his cancer treatments, Robertson directed his first fundraising ride.

Robertson was chosen by the Special Olympics World Organization to direct the Marathon and Half Marathon at the Special Olympics World Games, which saw the fastest races in history for these Games.

In both 1986 and 1987, he directed the fastest 10Ks in the world and achieved international success for establishing standards soon adopted by major marathons and road races around the world. Robertson spoke at a national road race director's conference in Boston and national conference in Phoenix regarding what it takes to manage a world class road race.

In addition, he has done events for GSK, Hendrick Motorsports, Triangle United Way, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NC, Bank of America, City of Raleigh, Town of Cary, WRAL and Capital Broadcasting, Carolina Hurricanes, Durham Bulls, Carolina Mudcats, Special Olympics and managed an NBA preseason game between the Charlotte Bobcats (Hornets) and Washington Wizards, as well as many other organizations.

He has served on over 25 Boards and over 30 Committees, including Triangle Educational Advancement Foundation (President), International Festival (President), Triangle United Way Marketing Board, Artsplosure, First Night Raleigh, Walk for Hope, Raleigh Bicentennial Celebration, Light Up Raleigh, Great Raleigh Weekend, Triangle Community Foundation and Raleigh Chamber of Commerce.

He has spoken to over 50 civic organizations and companies as well as giving presentations at several national marketing conferences.

Robertson has managed projects including the International Auto Expo, the Holiday Invitational Basketball Tournament, Hot Hoops 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament, the Capital City 3v3 Soccer Clash and served as Merchandise Director for the International Tall Ships Festival.

Projects Robertson managed have raised over $3,000,000 for local and national non-profit organizations. The Send-a-Kid to Camp Program, which he founded and managed, raised over $1,500,000 in the first 10 years and sent over 1000 underprivileged kids to summer camps around the state.

In 1992, Robertson was inducted into the Road Runners Club of America Hall of Fame and in 1996 was chosen to carry the Olympic Torch by the Olympic Committee for the 1996 Summer Olympics.
